An expression is obtained for the buoyant force acting on ideally conducting ellipsoids of revolution in an inhomogeneous magnetic field. The application of this formula to the estimation of the buoyant forces that drive magnetic clouds into the interplanetary space during solar flares and magnetospheric substorms is discussed. The relationship between the buoyant force and the hydromagnetic shock (injection) is examined.
