We attempt to classify the observed profiles of the broad emission lines from active galactic nuclei into a number of types. We propose a model for the broad-line region in which clouds are injected into an outflowing wind from a rotating disc. We then show how the characteristic scales in the model relate to features in our classification of the observations by comparing the observed profiles with those from the model in each class.
