The Bolocam Galactic Plane Survey (BGPS) is the first unbiased survey of the northern Galactic Plane at 1.1 mm. The entire survey covers 150 square degrees, including continuous coverage from l=350 to l=90 (-0.5 < b < 0.5) and selected regions in the outer galaxy such as W3/4/5, the Perseus Arm, and Gem OB1. Millimeter continuum measurements have been demonstrated as a reliable way to find the cold, dense cores in molecular clouds which are just beginning to form stars. The thermal emission from these dense cores is optically thin at millimeter wavelengths and therefore traces the total dust mass in the young cores, yielding complementary information to that obtained from shorter wavelength infrared surveys of star formation. The broad coverage of BGPS will allow for direct comparison to well-known surveys at other wavelengths including the GLIMPSE, MIPSGAL, MSX Galactic Plane, and FCRAO-Galactic Ring surveys. The combined multi-wavelength surveys will address fundamental questions about galactic star formation including mass functions, morphology, physical scales, and clustering properties. Since completing data collection in September 2007, the BGPS team has begun producing a complete set of images for the survey and creating the cloud core catalog, both of which will be made publicly available late in 2008. I will discuss the details and methodology of the Bolocam Galactic Plane Survey and present an overview of some of the results we expect to achieve with these unique data.
