Charged particle angular distribution features suggesting the presence of a closed magnetic loop have been observed as a result of a fortuitous set of interplanetary and solar events, on October 12, 1977, by the IMP 7 and 8 spacecraft. The magnetic topology of the loop, which must have extended beyond the orbit of the earth and been connected to particle sources and/or mirrors at both ends, is similar to that suggested by Gold (1960). The occurrence of a trapping-type electron distribution peaked at 90 deg to the magnetic field, while ions are strongly field-aligned and bidirectional, are the salient anisotropy features implying the presence of a loop.
