UNDER this title, Prof. D. Gabor1 has made some very interesting observations about an unusual type of low-pressure mercury vapour discharge, which was first observed by Dr. H. von Bertele2. The cathode, a water-cooled molybdenum thimble of 1 cm.2 area, dips in a trough of mercury, and the 15-amp. arc appears gradually to spread over its entire surface as a ``faintly luminous glow''.
