Linear theory is used to study the effects of earth's rotation on the stability of a thermohaline front of finite width. When the front is narrow and a Rossby radius of deformation based on Ruddick and Turner'r (1979) vertical scale is large, the fastest growing intrusion is nearly two-dimensional (the nonrotational mode). When the Rossby radius becomes small, an unstable rotational mode is observed in addition to the nonrotational mode. For a wide front, the two modes become indistinguishable.
