The Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey aims to get redshifts for
a sample of 1.4 million galaxies between 0.2 < z < 0.7,
with the goal of measuring the baryon oscillation signal in the
clustering of these galaxies and constraining the distance to
redshifts of 0.3 and 0.6 to better that 1%. The survey got first
spectroscopic data in Fall 2009; we present early results
from these data, focusing on the definition and properties of the galaxy sample.
