A unified nomenclature for the different regions of the earth magnetosphere is proposed. The unified nomenclature is designed to standardize the description of experimental data with respect to energy fluxes; the boundaries of the large scale auroral oval; the diffuse luminosity region poleward from the auroral oval and polar-cap auroras. A summary is given of the concepts concerning the spatial distribution of the auroras; the relevant parameters of high-energy particles precipitating into the atmosphere; and the large-scale hydrodynamic motions of the circumterrestrial plasma (convection); and electric fields and currents penetrating space near the earth.
