A new mechanism is proposed for the generation of arcs of the polar aurora. It is shown that the potential difference across the magnetosphere in the region where field-aligned currents issue from the ionosphere leads to a periodic dependence of the electric field on the distance. When this occurs, the field-aligned currents form several parallel layers which can be regarded as identical with auroral arcs.
