Some recent developments in auroral studies are reviewed with emphasis on the most important physical processes involved in aurora production. Processes determining the geographic distribution of diffuse aurorae are discussed, including the distribution of auroral electron and proton precipitation by latitude and local magnetic time, the absence of dawn-dusk asymmetry for the production of electrons and protons in the keV energy range, and the polar cusps as sources of auroral particles. Pitch-angle scattering of auroral particles is described in detail, and it is shown that the ring current is subjected to strong pitch-angle diffusion outside the plasmasphere. Correlations between temporal and spatial variations in the latitude profiles of auroral particles are summarized together with the effects of hot plasma-ionosphere interactions on auroral-particle fluxes.
