Down to absolute visual magnitude 18, it is estimated that there are about 2850 near-earth asteroids. With the renewed interest in near-earth asteroids and their possible role in the evolution of life on earth, there has been a corresponding increase in their rate of discovery. From 21 numbered earth-approaching asteroids known before 1970, the number has risen to 48 by June 1986. Based on features of their orbits, near-earth asteroids are divided into three classes: Aten, Apollo, and Amor types collectively referred to as AAAs. If those asteroids whose orbits are still uncertain are included, there are 92 objects in these three classes.
