We have embarked on an ambitious program to identify and characterize the galaxy clusters detected by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) through their Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect (SZE). We utilize a phased approach that first identifies clusters based on the presence of a luminous central red galaxy (i.e., the brightest cluster galaxy, or BCG) and an associated cluster red sequence. Subsequent steps involve measuring spectroscopic redshifts and obtaining mass estimates based on weak lensing, galaxy dynamics and cluster X-ray emission. In this talk we present preliminary results on the first step of identifying some 100 ACT SZE cluster candidates using multi-band imaging on 4-m class telescopes.
Financial support was provided by the NSF under the PIRE program (OISE-0530095).
