In a number of previous publications the depth variation of the activation volume for creep in the lower mantle has been calculated by making the crucial assumption that creep is a diffusion-controlled mechanism. These calculations were based on various empirical models which connect the Gibbs activation energy with macroscopic parameters like the shear modulus. In the present paper we make a calculation of the creep activation volume by: (1) applying directly the so-called cBΩ model; (2) combining it with the Grover-Getting-Kennedy equation of state. In both cases the calculation shows that the activation volume decreases by 50% from the top to the bottom of the lower mantle. The calculation makes use of the values of density, bulk modulus, and the pressure derivative of the bulk modulus that result from the seismic earth model (Preliminary Reference Earth Model (PREM)). Finally, the cBΩ model is also used for a discussion of Weertman's empirical relationship between viscosity and the melting temperature.
