The ALICE SPD is made up of 1200 front-end pixel ASICs bump-bonded to silicon sensor ladders for a total of 10 million pixel cells. An overview of the ladders, bump bonding, assembly and on-detector electronics system is presented. The basic element is a half-stave, made out of two ladders, each consisting of 5 ASICs. Two ladders, mounted on an aluminum/polyamide multilayer interconnect bus, constitute a half-stave. The complete detector consists of 120 half-staves on two layers. The readout, timing and control of each half-stave are performed by a PILOT multi chip module containing radiation tolerant ASICs with custom-made opto-electronic components. The pixel detector must comply with severe space and material budget constraints. The read-out electronics must not exceed 2 mm thickness and 13.8 mm width. The material budget is expected to be <1% X0 per layer.
