A number of parameters describing the luminosity profile of the airglow 6300 Å [OI] emission have been theoretically calculated for magnetically quiet conditions. The emission is assumed to arise from a two-step mechanism and the electron density profile is assumed to be well represented by an [alpha]-Chapman layer. Using these assumptions the following parameters are calculated: the height of maximum luminosity relative to the electron density peak; the maximum luminosity; the layer thickness; and the behavior in the neighborhood of the maximum luminosity. Some discussion is presented of the changes in the luminosity profile to be expected with changes in season and sunspot epoch.
