The argument of the angle of incidence of a ray striking the levelled surface of Mars is used to determine the 'air mass', which is analogous in meaning to the Bemporad function for the earth. A two-level spherical model of the atmosphere, polytropic in the lower zone and isothermal in the upper zone, is employed to calculate the air mass for angles of incidence in the range from 40 deg to 89 deg. It is shown that the results obtained can be useful in analyzing observations of Mars from space probes and terrestrial observatories.
