THE very interesting correspondence between Mr. Schumann and Dr. Jeans in NATURE of January 24 has not touched on one of the most difficult questions, raised by the brilliant paper in which Dr. Jeans makes out such a strong case for extending our time-scale for the life of a star to some 1013 to 1014 years. The problem is simply how we are to account for the existence of uranium and thorium.
