It is shown that particle acceleration in a tail configuration with Bn(z) = const cannot be explained in the framework of the guiding-center approximation with mu = const (where mu is the first adiabatic invariant). In order to explain this acceleration, it is necessary to take into account either adiabatic heating or the existence of regions with small values of Bn, where particles can be directly accelerated as they move along the electric field.
