The measurements of distant supernovae that have indicated that the expansion of the universe is accelerating do not yet tell us the identity of the "dark energy" that is causing the acceleration. This is a key physics question for our day, presenting great challenges for our fundamental physics theories. A range of experimental approaches are now being brought to bear to understand the properties of the dark energy and the universe's expansion history. I will discuss the recent results and ambitious scope of the current and planned projects, including a proposed new satellite, the Supernova / Acceleration Probe (SNAP).
