The time variation of sunspot activity during the period of 1969-1986 has been described using the area and the number of sunspot groups for both hemispheres as the indices of sunspot activity. A 17-month periodicity is found, consistent with the 500-day periodicity of flare occurrence noted by Ichimoto et al. (1985). A 17-month periodicity was also found for the latter half of cycle 20 (1969-1975), although this periodicity is less pronounced than that in cycle 21.
