Isentropic compression experiments (ICE) allow the continuous dynamic compressibility curve of a material to be measured in a single experiment. Its use in validating models of dynamic material response has caused a large demand for it on the 20 MA Sandia Z accelerator, where a shockless magnetic drive is used. Here we transfer this technique to Saturn, a 10 MA accelerator providing maximum ramp pressures of 50 GPa. Saturn was tailored to produce a smooth drive time structure and instrumented for velocity interferometry and pyrometry. Drive reproducibility is adequate, but alignment fixturing problems make it difficult to achieve the same precision as is possible at Z. Modifications are in progress. Highlights included the useful comparison of slightly varying PZT (ferroelectric ceramic) and ALOX (alumina loaded epoxy) compositions, temperature measurement using optical pyrometry, and the development of a new technique for preheating samples.
