On 7 May 1996 the largest flux detected by a ground-based gamma-ray telescope was observed during a remarkable flare from Markarian 421. Lasting less than 24 hours, the flux increased to nearly 10 times the steady Crab flux with a doubling time of about one hour. Because of the strength of the detection, a relatively pure sample of gamma rays can be selected and, from these, a preliminary energy spectrum has been determined. This spectrum will be presented and its implications discussed.
