The Standard Model assumption of lepton universality implies that the weak gauge bosons couple in an identical manner to each generation of leptons. Tests of lepton universality using charged current weak interactions are presented, with emphasis on results obtained from the most recent OPAL measurements of τ branching ratios. The potential contribution of these results to ongoing searches for new types of physics is discussed.
