Using ion trap data from Intercosmos-2 satellite, the temporal and geomagnetic variations of transition level for O(+) and H(+) are examined. The nighttime temporal changes of this level are characterized by one maximum distribution about midnight when the transition level attains a height of 1100-1150 km. At sunset, this level has values of about 900-1000 km. The maximum transition level observed before midnight is considerably higher than the one after midnight, and before sunrise its values decrease to about 600 km. The transition-level variations determined by local time changes are stronger than the ones caused by the geomagnetic control over the ion concentrations. Some qualitative explanations are offered taking into consideration the proton flux variations and the planetary distribution of protons and oxygen ions at these altitudes.
