The electron temperature on the central axis of a discharge established
in a mixture of sodium, mercury, and xenon gases at about 600 Torr
pressure was measured by detection of radio-frequency thermal noise. The
deduced value of 4200 °K compares favorably with determinations by
spectroscopic methods and theoretical calculations.
