The television system aboard the spacecrafts Vega 1 and Vega 2 observed comet Halley from March 4 to 11, 1986 and transmitted about 1500 images to earth. The best image of the cometary nucleus were obtained from distances of 8000-9000 km. The nucleus is an irregular potato-shaped body roughly 14 x 7.5 x 7.5 km in size which rotates with a period of 53 + or -3 hr. The surface is rather dark; the measured albedo is about 0.04 + 0.02 or -0.01. Active emission of matter was observed on the sunlit side of the nucleus.
