Telescopes from the Ground Up is a resource for the International Year of Astronomy that can be used for a variety of purposes and settings. This online exploration, available on the Amazing Space Web site, traces the 400 years of telescope development from Galileo's Refractor to NASA's Great Observatories. It also highlights the technology necessary for telescope development. The milestones of telescope development are presented in 10 sections called "eras". Each era is supported by associated "telescope pages” that provide details about the key telescopes of the time. Additional features of Telescopes from the Ground Up include biographies of the inventors and astronomers behind the telescopes, interactive graphics, and a "Get to the root of it” section. "Get to the root of it” includes informational graphics and text that provide the basics of telescope optics, light, and color. This section can be accessed through and used with the telescope pages, or used as a stand-alone resource. The modular design of Telescopes from the Ground Up allows it to be used for various purposes. It can be used to support informational reading skills, provide an overview of scientific and technological advancements over time, or to review and/or reinforce scientific principles and concepts.
