Telepresence allows a person to experience as if he or she is actually present in a different place or time. For remotely located sites, satellite communications are being utilized to develop the medium of telepresence. In this presentation we summarize several experiments conducted using NASA's Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS) and fiber-optic networks to demonstrate telepresence utilizing data rates ranging from 155 to 622 megabytes per second. In addition, we identify future challenges and directions for telepresence applications over advanced high data-rate hybrid (satellite and terrestrial) networks.
