A concatenated coding scheme was developed for use in deep space
missions. Telemetry signal transmission is improved by concatenation of
a convolutional code and the (256,224) Reed-Solomon code over GF (257).
Hardware implementation of the coding scheme is envisaged in 1985 for
the Giotto mission to Halley's comet.
