Empirical equations derived from the correlation of various physical parameters were used to analyze available data on lithospheric and astenospheric thickness. It was found that the thermal stability of the lithosphere is regulated by a combination of its age and the density of terrestrial heat flow; its thickness increases with cooling and decreases with heating. It is concluded that the state of tectonic activity is dependent upon the lithospheric/astenospheric volumetric ratio which in turn may vary in response to thermal changes in the mantle and tectonosphere. Variations in the heat flow associated with vertical and lateral tectonic movements at the earth's surface can denote these changes.
