Experiments have been carried out with various designs of equipment capable of producing and introducing into the atmosphere unipolar, singly charged aerosol particles in the submicron size range in concentrations of the order of 108 particles cm-3. Apparatus consisting of an aerosol particle generator and an aerosol particle charger have been constructed in various sizes having outputs of electrified aerosol particles ranging from 10 to 600 [mu]A. The perturbations in the fine weather electric potential gradient and space charge concentration produced by even the smaller generators can readily be detected several kilometers down wind. The larger space charge generating apparatus produces a sufficiently intense electric field down wind to permit demonstration of the electrical levitation of charged water droplets that it has been suggested takes place in thunderstorms.
