The CMS detector is a worldwide endeavour gathering an extended number of contributors and putting together many parts coming from different countries. In this context CERN operates like a sort of 'general coordinator' and is obliged to put a special emphasis on strict criteria of quality, calculations, control certificates and full traceability of materials and operations, which are all of paramount importance to the successful integration and function of the parts.
This paper discusses the technicalities related for the selection of machining parameters to optimally balance geometrical/dimensional accuracy of the produced parts and their cost-effectiveness. These are the components of the grease pad assemblies that support and allow the precise positioning and alignment of the CERN CMS apparatus. The work, an in-kind Greek contribution, mainly consists of machining several large steel plates to various forms, including large pockets and inclined surfaces.
