During the last decade the public under- standing of science has become an issue for scientists and politicians, and most bodies supporting science now devote some of their resources to this area. There are normally few restrictions on who can apply for funds and many teachers have obtained support to promote their subject. This article describes some examples from the fields of astrophysics and particle physics in which teachers have played a principal role using funds gained from PPARC, the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council.
