With copper-doped beryllium as the ablator, the putative technically simplest NIF target involves the bonding of two hemispheres with a joint of differing material. Earlier experiments on Nova have assessed the impact of such a joint on target drive uniformity in planar geometry. We are designing experiments in cylindrical geometry to begin to evaluate the additional effect of convergence. The target geometry will involve a cylinder with a joint, mounted within a Nova hohlraum, with its axis normal to the main hohlraum axis. The primary diagnostic is expected to be transverse radiography through diagnostic ports in the hohlraum walls. We are using the Rage automatic-mesh-refinement code as the primary target design tool. The code is being validated for this application by comparison of its results with a previously performed cylindrical experiment in the same geometry with a notch in the outer wall of the cylinder.
