The preliminary design and cost estimates of a lunar solar power station for the supply of a lunar base were performed. A power demand during a lunar day of 7.5 MW and during a lunar night of 2.5 MW, as well as photovoltaic power conversion were assumed. The option with the minimum sum of procurement and space transportation costs was selected. The facility consists of 228 Sun-following solar generators equipped with GaAs cells with a concentration ratio of 10, and 15 units with electrolysis and fuel cells with cryogenic storage of hydrogen and oxygen. The total systems mass is 1170 metric tons; the power output of the solar generators is 17.8 MW; the overall power conversion efficiency 9.6 percent; acquisition costs 4.4 billion dollars (1987) assuming 2000 dollars/kg transportation costs to the Moon; and mean lunar energy cost 8.5 dollars/kWh.
