The authors investigate systematic errors introduced in the calibration of a Stokes polarimeter when the calibration optics deviate from ideal. To accomplish this, they employ a linearized treatment of the Mueller calculus which allows for small and arbitrary imperfections in the Mueller matrices of the calibration optics, as well as a small amount of polarization in the calibration light source. The authors find that half of the response matrix elements contain systematic errors which can be related to imperfections in certain elements of the Mueller matrices of the calibration optics.
