With a view to encouraging magnetic observatory staff to make fuller use of their own data, a simple but rigorous method is presented for the determination of coherent, periodic variations from long series of observatory data. The method is readily adaptable to the different types of data published by observatories, is able to cope with gaps in data, is tuneable to any desired frequency and can run on a modest PC. As an illustration of the method, it has been applied to data from the Kandilli Observatory.
