Optimal descent trajectories for a space vehicle executing a soft landing on Mars are analyzed. Trajectories which assure a soft landing with the smallest possible weight allocation to the combined parachute-retrorocket landing system are sought. On the basis of an initial analysis of the segment of the descent in which the active soft landing system functions, optimization criteria for the passive aerodynamic braking phase are determined.
