The HF ground backscatter simulation technique has been extended to enable the spectral characteristics (Doppler shifts) to be synthesized. Data for the synthesis is generated by a ray-tracing program, and the results presented in the formats encountered in experimental studies. The technique has been used to predict the spectral characteristics which would result from the passage of a certain class of traveling ionospheric disturbance through the antenna beam of a backscatter sounder. To data the modeling has been restricted to a particular class of ionospheric perturbation, but the technique allows the spectral characteristics of other types of perturbations to be readily investigated.
