Data obtained with the radio altimeter aboard the Venera-8 lander are analyzed to determine the properties of the surface layer of Venus in the area around the landing site. It is found that the surface albedo is about 0.08, the dielectric constant of the soil is approximately 3.2, and the density of the soil is roughly 1.4 g/cu cm. A difference of 1.2 km between the measured altitude of the lander above the actual surface and its altitude above the isobaric surface, determined from pressure and temperature measurements, is attributed to real changes in surface relief and to the inaccuracy of determining altitude on the basis of pressure and temperature measurements.
