Fundamental theories of the universe are discussed. The classical
viewpoint is reviewed along with the basic forces of nature, the quark
model, grand unification and supersymmetry. The superstring concept and
cosmic strings are examined, and their potential of serving as a 'theory
of everything' is addressed.
