The origin of the optical light curves of type I supernovae (SN I) is investigated. It is shown that both the expected X-ray emission and the precursor optical emission are sensitively dependent on the presupernova envelope structure because this radiation is produced when the explosion shock wave breaks through the stellar surface. Several light-curve models are reviewed, the spectra of three SN I are examined, and the early luminosity of a SN I is considered. The total radiant energy in X-rays is estimated to be about 2 x 10 to the 43rd erg for a compact-star model and approximately 3 x 10 to the 47th erg for an extended-envelope model. It is concluded that the early radiation history of a SN I is closely related to the structure of the presupernova star.
