We discuss how cosmic strings relevant for galaxy formation can appear in certain gauge models inspired by the ten dimensional E8 × E8 superstring theory. Despite their superheavy (~ 1015-1016 GeV) mass scale these strings, which also happen to be superconducting, are produced only when the temperature of the universe approaches the TeV scale. An inflationary scanario can therefore precede the phase transition which gives rise to the cosmic strins. The generation of the baryon asymmetry in the presence of such high scales is also discussed.
