A theoretical model of a gravitational system embedded in a nonempty background is applied to clusters of galaxies embedded in superclusters. A comparison of density profiles with observational data yields satisfactory agreement, even for the observed secondary maximum (SM). In addition, the correlation pointed out by Oemler (1974) between the SM behavior and the galaxy type content is clarified. It is shown that a quasi-equilibrium model of a cluster of galaxies including an SM is possible if the interaction of the cluster with a slowly expanding (or contracting) local background (supercluster) is taken into account.
