High-resolution observations of fine structure in sunspots have at last made it possible to answer a very old question: what causes the filamentary structure of the penumbra, with magnetic fields forming an interlocking comb-like configuration, that surrounds the dark central umbra of a sunspot? This unexpected geometry can only be explained by an understanding of the interaction between magnetic fields and small-scale turbulent convection outside the spot. This interaction leads to downwards transport of magnetic flux, submerging magnetic flux tubes below the solar surface and resulting in a strongly fluted structure. An idealized version of this process can be demonstrated in numerical experiments.
