A singularly well-exposed example of sulfur lava flows, on Lastarria volcano in Chile, is described, where the liquid sulfur appears to have been formed by melting of fumarolic sulfur deposits caused by a rise in the thermal gradient owing to the renewed activity of the magmatic source. The color and texture characteristics of the lava are described and discussed in terms of the physical and chemical events that occurred as the lava erupted and cooled.
