Subdwarfs (SD), the class of F to M stars somewhat smaller than those on the main sequence, are characterized, with consideration of their significance for the early history of the Galaxy. The spectral peculiarities, low metallicity, and (presumably) normal He content of the SD locate them about 1 mag below the Hyades main sequence; they form part of the high-velocity, almost spherically distributed halo population which essentially does not rotate with the Galaxy. The role of this halo population in the Galactic-evolution model of Eggen et al. (1962) is discussed. Graphs and diagrams of the SD parameter relationships are provided.
