RECENTLY, Fremlin1 has suggested that craters on the Moon may be filled with dust to considerable depths and that extremely high temperatures may be attained in them. While the effects described by him must exist, it should be pointed out that the extreme values he predicts are obtained by using a value for the thermal conductivity of the dust which is probably much too low and combining with this a value of the heat flux which is probably much too high. These points will be discussed in order.
