Through studies of the Hubble Deep Fields and other deep surveys, it is possible to generally examine star formation at high redshift by gathering information about a common set of objects. A Local Universe counterpart, a common ``star formation database'' for a well-defined sample of nearby galaxies, would be an enormous asset to studies of galaxy evolution. By assembling images of gaseous and stellar tracers for a common sample, it becomes possible to consistently assess the relationship of gas, stars, and star formation on subkiloparsec scales. With the BIMA Survey of CO in Nearby spiral Galaxies (BIMA SONG), we are currently creating a database of molecular gas emission in 44 nearby spirals; further we are assembling a moderate-resolution atomic gas (HI) database. With this proposal, we request optical and near-infrared observations (BVRIJK and H(alpha)) to complete the optical/infrared component of our database. As properties of galaxies in the Local Universe are now being used to model the expected properties of the high- redshift galaxy population, this database will make an important contribution to our understanding of galaxy evolution and star formation in the Universe.
