A detailed investigation of the P travel-time curve by use of LRSM data over a U.S.-wide aperture suggests that the actual curve is composed of near-linear or only slightly curved segments with intersections of the segments being either sharp or the requisite change in curvature between adjacent segments being concentrated in short distance ranges. This curve implies near step-wise increases in P velocity at several depths in the mantle. It seems certain that the actual travel-time curve is distinctly different in nature than that recently published by Herrin et al. (1968). It is demonstrated that real differences in P travel-time and thus in mantle velocity structure occur within the Earth.
